Seedlings: From Mother Nature's Nursery to Yours

What's the big fuss about these Seedling products?!?

Babies are not small adults!  Pound for pound, children consume more food, water, and air than adults.  Research suggests that there is a link between neurobehavioral disorders in children and exposure to toxins.  The physiological make up of baby's skin versus that of a child or adult is much different, and therefore, more vulnerable to toxins.  I can't tell you how often I hear the excuse, "But it is such a small amount".  The body breaks down many of the toxins we are exposed to, but not all of them.  Continuous exposer overloads our natural detoxification system and leads to a buildup in our body over time.  This bioaccumulation is referred to as "Body Burden".  Go ahead and take a look at the ingredients in your current baby products.  Here are the top 10 ingredients to avoid:

1.  Synthetic Fragrance: Due to trade secrets, companies do not have to disclose what ingredients are being used in the fragrance
2.  Parabens: Used as a preservative.  Look for ingredients with parabens, or benzoic acid, or propyl ester.
3.  Phthalates: Used as a preservative.  Avoid products with diethyhexyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, or diethyl phthalate.
4.  1,4-Dioxane, Ethylated Surfactants: Stay away from any ingredients that contain the letters "eth" and "PEG"
5.  Propylene Glycol: A petroleum based chemical that is found in baby wipes and is used to absorb liquids and maintain moisture levels.
6.  Mineral Oil: A cheap byproduct of petroleum processing and acts as a barrier on the skin, no allowing the skin to breathe and release toxins.
7.  Triclosan: Anything that's labeled as "antibacterial" likely contains triclosan, which is an endocrine disruptor and harmful to the environment.
8.  Bisphonel-A (BPA): A hormone- disrupting chemical and can cause damage to the brain, reproductive system, heart, and liver.
9.  SLS & SLES: Commonly found in personal care products and what causes those synthetically made products to foam.
10.  Talc:  A powdered mineral added to baby powders as a drying agent, but known as a lung irritant and may be carcinogenic.

Thankfully, I can kick toxins to the curb with Young Living's NEW Seedlings line of products, perfectly designed for our babies.

Not only are Seedlings products toxin free, but they feature the Calm Scent Blend (Lavender, Bergamot (FC free), Coriander, Geranium, and Ylang Ylang)

Bath time is a critical time for cognitive and emotional development.  Generally, the parents are technology free, so the ENTIRE moment is about the child.  Bath time engages many of the senses (sight, touch, hearing, smell) that babies' brain need.  Bath time also encourages touch between child and parent.  Don't let chemical invade such a precious time!

Massaging your baby is a way to encourage sensory stimulation and it ultimately aids in baby's development.  Research shows that routine touch and massage by a loving parent or caregiver are critical to a baby's growth, communication, and learning.  Touch is the first way a baby learns to communicate and is a wonderful way to strengthen your bond with the baby.

Enjoy the Outdoors with Young Living

Our family loves the outdoors, but we don't love toxins.  Just looking at the ingredients in common bug sprays and sunscreens is enough to make this Momma sick.  Check out the Trouble with Ingredients in Sunscreens and see how the Environmental Working group rates your products.  Essential oils are a better way.  They are totally chemical free, steam distilled or cold pressed from pure plants.  There’s nothing in them but that oil, whether it is lemon, tangerine, lavender, peppermint, or others.  There are over a million uses for essential oils.  In this class I will help you enjoy your summer without the toxins.  It’s easy, simple, and it’s a small change you can take to protect you and your family.  It’s time to take charge of what’s in your house.

We were so thankful that Young Living released a Mineral Sunscreen Lotion at this year's Young Living Convention!  Made with ingredients you can feel good about, Young Living's Mineral Sunscreen Lotion provides protection against UVA and UVB rays without harsh chemical ingredients.  Instead, the non-greasy sunscreen offers broad-spectrum SPF 10 protection using naturally derived plant- and mineral-based ingredients, including non-nano zinc oxide - a physical UV blocker.  The lightweight formula goes on smooth and stays water- and sweat-resistant for 80 minutes, so you can feel comfortable while you stay moving.  With hypoallergenic ingredients and skin-loving essential oils - such as Helichrysum, Carrot Seed, and Frankincense - this gentle sunscreen rubs on smoothly without a white residue, so you can effortlessly add it to your time outdoors.

Promote healthy skin with LavaDerm™, Young Living’s refreshing Lavender spray. It’s made with skin-loving ingredients such as aloe, Lavender, Northern Lights Black Spruce, and Helichrysum to gently support healthy-looking skin. The skin is our largest organ, and we want to take care of it!  Did you know that sun exposure may create fluid loss and dehydration?  Yes, that is why it is important to not only drink plenty of fluids, but also to hydrate the skin.  LavaDerm’s mild and gentle formula lightly moisturizes while also soothing and rejuvenating skin. Incorporate its refreshing feel and calming aroma into your nighttime routine or use it as needed throughout the day. The compact and convenient design of this skin moisturizer spray makes it easy to store wherever you need it, whether in your purse, travel bag, bedside table, or office desk.

UV rays start a free-radical cascade that results in damage to skin cells.  Studies have shown that applying Myrrh oil after sun exposure halts peroxidation.  Carrot Seed essential oil is another oil that is well known for its skin-supporting properties.

For more on supporting dry skin, visit Young Living SkinCare for Dry Skin.

Also, try the newly released LavaDerm After Sun Spray to refresh and recover from a day in the sun.  This naturally derived after-sun spray offers temporary relief from the pain and itching of minor burns, minor cuts, sunburns, scrapes, insect bites, and minor skin irritations, so your family can keep playing all day!  Using menthol from mint, this spray soothes and cools the skin, providing immediate relief from the effects of outdoor activity.  Plus, its moisturizing qualities - from ingredients such as aloe, Lavender essential oil, and Helichrysum essential oil - also help prevent peeling and leave skin feeling soft and smooth instead of tacky or sticky.  With a vegan-friendly formula made without alcohol, synthetic fragrances, or synthetic colorants, LavaDerm After-Sun Spray is ready for the whole family to use at the beach, on a hike, or during any outdoor playtime.

This time last year our family was on the trip of a lifetime touring through Utah and Arizona the week before and after Young Living’s Grand Convention.  We explored some incredible places, but it was HOT!  On one particular hike to Corona Arch it was 100+ degrees and the sun beat down on us the entire time.  Thankfully, I had my Peppermint essential oil with me!  We applied it to the back of our necks and spines and added Peppermint Vitality to our water to cool us from the inside out.  We even applied it to our hands as we held onto the hot guide cables, climbed ladders, and crawled across the slick rock.  What an incredible experience (and I’m not sure we would have made it without our peppermint oil!).  Since then I have been a huge fan of Peppermint!  I make a cooling mist by adding Peppermint essential oil to water in a spray bottle – great for sports, exercise, mowing, and anytime you need to cool off!

Depending on where you live and the annoyances that surround you, you will need to tweak this recipe a bit.  We spend a lot of time hiking and RVing, so finding a way for us to enjoy the outdoors annoyance and toxin free was very important to me.  Young Living’s Purification Essential oil is a blend of Citronella, Lavandin, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Myrtle, and Tea Tree.  Citronella is well known for its effect on pesky bugs.  In a spray bottle I start with 20 drops of Purification and add 10 drops each of Citronella, Peppermint, Cedarwood, and Palo Santo.  Thyme, Lemon, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Geranium, and Pine are other oils I occasionally will add.
One particular hike we went on this summer, the grass was taller than some of our children.  Our son, who was well coated with my homemade concoction, was hiking directly in front of me and I could literally see ticks jumping onto him and immediately back off.  My husband, on the other hand, forgot to spray himself before leaving and picked off dozens of ticks and ended up with 3 tick bites.

And now Young Living offers an Insect Repellant for your convenience!  Don't leg bug bites ruin your family's outdoor fun this summer!  Young Living's Insect Repellant is clinically proven to repel mosquitos and other tiny invaders using only 100 percent naturally derived, plant based ingredients.  Pure sesame oil and a carefully selected blend of essential oils traditionally used for their bug-repellant properties come together to make up all 99 percent of the active ingredients in this formula.  The other 1 percent?  Vitamin E.  That means you can use it on your little ones and not worry about the harsh chemicals used in many traditional repellents.  You'll also love the pleasant, citrusy aroma and smooth, non-greasy, non-sticky application.  So whether you're spending time in the backyard or the backwoods, you can feel great knowing you have a pure, plant-based way to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Honestly, its been a long time since I have been in a boat, but some of the roads we take our RV down can leave me feeling pretty green.  Thankfully, a whiff of DiGize or Peppermint and a drop applied on the abdomen helps me enjoy the scenery and adventure.  The same would apply if you are hitting some rides at a theme park this summer.
Lemon is great at neutralizing smells, cutting through grease, and removing gum from hair – a great one to have on hand as you have some fun this summer!
